Maidstone United 2 Hampton & Richmond 0 match report: Deon Moore header and Davide Rodari own goal give Stones first National League South win of the season

Deon Moore opened his account as Maidstone overcame a missed penalty to beat Hampton and claim their first National League South win of the season.

John Gilbert saw a first-half spot-kick saved as the sides went in goalless at the break.

But Moore’s header just after the break was followed by a Davide Rodari own goal as United took control against a Beavers side who hadn’t conceded in their opening two games.

Lenny Holden made his first league start in goal for the Stones with Nathan Harness ruled out through the head injury sustained against Torquay on Saturday.

With Holden in goal, United named academy keeper Chris Swift on the bench, which also included Ruben Carvalho for the first time this season after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Maidstone, with outstanding skipper Sam Corne popping up all over the place, made a bright start against the visitors, who won 3-0 at Dorking at the weekend.

They saw plenty of possession early on and put several balls into the Hampton box.

The Stones had the ball in the net in the seventh minute when Jephte Tanga’s cross was nodded back across goal by Moore and finished by Dajon Golding but the linesman’s flag went up.

George Elokobi’s side were awarded a penalty on the quarter-hour mark when Tanga was tripped in the box following a right-wing corner from Gilbert.

Gilbert stepped up but seemed to rush his routine and a tame penalty was saved by Hampton keeper James Holden.

Maidstone lost their rhythm after the missed spot-kick as Hampton grew into the game, putting several crosses of their own into the Stones box.

Lenny Holden cut out a cross from Harry Gardner following a swift counter-attack and David Sesay was alert to deal with a ball to the back post before half-time.
