Maguire, De Gea, Ronaldo - assessing Manchester United's captain candidates

Erik ten Hag will have a lot of big decisions to make when he takes charge of Manchester United.

In a rare success story for United this season, they managed to accomplish their aim of hiring a new manager before the conclusion of the season last week by securing Ajax coach Ten Hag to a three-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months. The 52-year-old will begin work at Old Trafford in the summer.

It's clear to see after yet another disastrous campaign that Ten Hag has a massive job on his hands and the hard work will have to begin immediately to try and get the club back on track. Recruitment, selling players, devising plans, tactics and how he wants his new team to play will all be pivotal early decisions in the off-season.

Another choice that the Dutchman will have to make is who his captain will be. Harry Maguire is the current occupier of the armband after he was handed it by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following Ashley Young's departure just a few months after signing for the club.

But the centre-back has come under heavy fire this season for repeated poor displays at the back and for his leadership capacity. There are growing calls for Maguire to be relieved of his duties and for another player to be assigned the captaincy instead.
