'Maggots in the bathroom, rat droppings on the floor and a used tampon in the toilet...'

A mum living in emergency council accommodation has spoken out about the 'horrible' conditions she and her young family are forced to live in while they wait for a permanent home.

The young woman, who asked to remain anonymous, has been on the list for a permanent council home since 2017 but has yet to be provided with one.

The woman, and her young family, had to be moved away from their 'supportive' family members a few weeks agoand are now living in Fallowfield Lodge, in Levenshulme. It is a hotel that is used by councils to house individuals and families when they are in need of emergency accommodation. Yet, the conditions of the hotel have been described as so filthy and hostile, people do not feel safe living there.

She described the dirty hotel room she and her three children were placed in by Tameside Council's housing service.

"I have a supportive extended family but they didn't have room for us, they have families of their own. We were sleeping on sofas for a year, going from different family member's homes, until the council got us a place to stay. But the place we're staying in is disgusting," she said.

"The first night we were there I found rat droppings on the floor and maggots in the bathroom. It's horrible. There was even a used tampon left in the toilet that hadn't been removed. It took cleaners two days to take it away."

She and her children, one of whom has additional needs, were forced to leave the last home they were provided with as it was a private rental property and the landlord raised the rent to a level she was unable to afford.
