M66 LIVE as motorway blocked both ways due to police incident with 'severe' traffic delays

The M66 is blocked in both directions due to a police incident.

The motorway is shut between Junction 1 at Ramsbottom and the A56 at Edenfield.

There are severe delays with congestion backed up to the M60 at Simister Island.

In a post on X, National Highways: North West wrote: "Traffic is stopped on the #M66 in both directions in #GreaterManchester between J1 #Ramsbottom and the #A56 at #Edenfield.

"This is due to an ongoing Police led incident."

According to traffic monitoring service Inrix, the incident has caused congestion to the M60 at Junction 18 for Simister Island.

Greater Manchester Police is dealing with the incident following reports of a 'concern for welfare'.

The M66 has reopened in both directions. However, there is still heavy traffic on the motorway.

GMP have confirmed that the incident has now been dealt with. The M66 has reopened but long delays will continue.

The M66 is now closed northbound at junction 1 for Ramsbottom and the A56 is closed south at Edenfield.
