Luton Town CEO makes Premier League claim amid promotion challenge

The club have been looking to finance building a new stadium at Power Court.

Sweet believes that earning a move to the top flight would solve all of their potential issues in one go.

The Hatters are competing for a play-off place as the season draws to its concluding weeks. 

The club initially received planning permission for a 17,500 seater stadium in January 2019 but have been hampered by numerous issues ever since, most notably the coronavirus pandemic. 

Late last year the property arm of the club, known as 2020 developments, issued revised proposals, that did not include the new ground, unanimously approved by the Luton Borough Council. 

But the club intends to submit more proposals in the first half of this year regarding a new stadium. 

Sweet has now claimed that the club’s concerns would all be solved with promotion to the Premier League. 

“We have had many bumps in the road,” said Sweet, via Luton Today. 

“As if dealing with economic crunches, Brexit, judicial reviews and significant changes to stadia compliance weren’t enough, since planning consent we’ve had to ensure a seismic crash in retail, a time-halting global pandemic, a major energy crisis and now a global political conflict in Eastern Europe.

“All of these events have taken a material toll on our plans and progress, particular on the cost of the new stadium,

“A single promotion via the play-offs to the Premier League will, of course, solve all of those challenges in one fell swoop.”

Nathan Jones’ side are currently fourth in the Championship table following a 2-2 draw with Millwall last weekend.

The Hatters twice came from behind to secure an important point for the side, with only seven games left in the season.
