Manchester United recorded their 15th Premier League clean sheet of the season during their 1-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Taking a first-half lead through Bruno Fernandes, United were forced to withstand some pressure during the second half, certainly in the latter stages of the contest, as Villa looked to maintain their record of scoring in every game since Unai Emery took charge for the first time back in November. But as much as Villa tried to turn the screw in pursuit of an equaliser, they were unsuccessful in their efforts, meaning an impressive record came to an end.

Nevertheless, Villa could not be too disheartened by the fact they failed to find a way past David de Gea and a stubborn United rearguard; the Reds have conceded just eight times in the Premier League on their own patch all season. They have kept 10 clean sheets in 16 home games this term and have kept clean sheets in each of their last five outings in M16.

Considering United are currently without both members of their first-choice centre-back partnership through injury, it is an achievement that is all the more impressive. They have three home games left and you would not bet against them adding another three clean sheets to their tally.

It would have been easy for United to capitulate following the losses of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez on the same evening, but, in fact, it has spurred them on. With the exception of a forgettable night in Seville and an uninspiring second half against Tottenham Hotspur last week, they have not done a lot wrong since their World Cup-winning centre-backs were assigned to the treatment room.
