Luis Suarez breaks Lionel Messi’s South American World Cup qualifying scoring record

Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez broke a record held by Argentina captain Lionel Messi by scoring in Uruguay’s 2-0 win against Chile on Tuesday night.

The two-time World Cup winners earned their place in this year’s tournament by qualifying through the South American system, finishing behind Brazil and Argentina in the table.

Suarez scored his 29th goal in 62 qualifying matches with his overhead kick against Chile, surpassing the 28 goals in 60 matches that Messi has managed.

Taking to Instagram after the match, Suarez admitted it was a ‘special’ night for him as he made history for his country.

‘Special night, special game, special shirt and a goal,’ Suarez wrote on Instagram.

‘What more could I ask for in unique and unforgettable moments for my country?’

Suarez is, of course, a former team-mate of Messi’s following the pair’s six years together at Barcelona.

The pair are close friends off the pitch and maintain a tight relationship, despite the fact they’ve both departed the Camp Nou.

Messi failed to find the net as his country drew 1-1 with Ecuador, though both countries have already qualified for the tournament.
