'There were incidents' - Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard reflects on Liverpool days with Luis Suarez

Aston Villa have been linked with a sensational move for soon to be free agent Luis Suarez, who Steven Gerrard believes has matured since his playing days with the Uruguayan at Liverpool.

Suarez and Gerrard played with each other from 2011 to 2014, before the striker pursued a move away to La Liga to join Lionel Messi and Neymar in one of the most formidable attacks world football has ever seen. Suarez's contract at his current club Atletico Madrid expires at the end of the season and links have emerged regarding a possible reunion between Gerrard and Suarez at Villa Park.

Speaking on the type of character Suarez was in the dressing room whilst speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, Gerrard outlined: "Look there was a few incidents that were tough as a friend of Luis. I tried to be a friend and an advisor, I was a bit older than him and a bit more experienced.

"When he had a situation with Brendan Rodgers I tried to be a bit of a between them but there's certain situations where you have to back away and let him and his people deal with it themselves. Not that I didn't want to help but sometimes is bigger than it was.

"But the guy I know and the character I know is different to the incidents that he's had and you know I'm sure he's matured on the back of them experiences."

If Suarez was to come reunite with Gerrard at Villa, at 35 years of age he would likely be asked to come in and contribute both on the pitch and off it as a role model to the younger players within the dressing room.
