Luis Rubiales RESIGNS as president of Spanish FA after World Cup kissing row with cryptic 'powers that be' statement

The President of the Spanish FA Luis Rubiales has RESIGNED from his post after mounting pressure on his position.

It comes after the Royal Spanish Football Federation chief was heavily criticised for kissing Spain star Jennifer Hermoso after their Women's World Cup final win over England last month. Rubiales had faced calls from across the game in Spain and abroad to step down from his post, with clubs in La Liga joining the Spanish national women's football team in issuing statements to that effect. Now, in an interview with Piers Morgan, the supremo admits he will step down from his duties.

It comes after the Spaniard was was provisionally barred from football activity for an initial 90 days by FIFA while the governing body investigated the incident. Hermoso revealed she did not consent to the kiss that sparked widespread outrage. Rubiales gave the news in an interview with Morgan before releasing a statement on social media that read: "Today at 9:30 p.m. I transmitted to the acting President, Mr. Pedro Rocha, my resignation from the position of President of the RFEF. I have also informed you that I have done the same with my position at UEFA so that my Vice-Presidency position can be replaced.

"After the swift suspension carried out by FIFA, plus the rest of the procedures opened against me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position. Insisting on waiting and clinging to it is not going to contribute to anything positive, neither for the Federation nor for Spanish football.
