Lucas Torreira drops major hint over Arsenal future as Mikel Arteta looks for midfield options

Lucas Torreira has dropped a major hint as to whether or not he will remain with Arsenal next season as Mikel Arteta plans a midfield overhaul at the club this summer.

The Uruguayan has spent the season with Fiorentina where he has made 29 appearances in Serie A and popped up with five goals and one assist. The 26-year-old is set for a return to the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season unless the Italian club or another team can agree a deal with Arsenal.

And Torreira may have dropped a major hint as to where his future lies next season. Having made his 100th appearance in the Italian top-flight, the midfielder took to social media to thank both Fiorentina and his old club Sampdoria and said that he is hoping for more appearances in the division.

A translated Spanish tweet read: 100 matches in @SerieA! Thank you @acffiorentina and @sampdoria for opening the doors for me, I will always be grateful. Here's to many more! #ForzaViola #ForzaDoria."

Arsenal signed Torreira from Sampdoria in 2018 for £25million and he instantly became a fan-favourite with his combative nature in midfield and his willingness to get stuck into challenges. He was then allowed to leave on loan to join Atletico Madrid in 2020 where he was a bit-part player - he did pick up a La Liga title in Spain.

Last summer he was sent out on loan again to Fiorentina and could make the move permanent in the near future with the north London outfit reportedly wanting just over £12m for his signature. Mikel Arteta's side have been linked with a number of midfielders as replacements including James Ward-Prowse, Yves Bissouma and Ruben Neves.
