Lucas Torreira future latest: Arsenal expecting midfielder back after shock U-turn on Fiorentina deal

Lucas Torreira will return to Arsenal this summer after Fiorentina failed to agree a long-term deal for the midfielder, a report has claimed.

The Uruguay international has been on the periphery of the Gunners team for some time now with his future unclear. He was a key player under former Arsenal boss Unai Emery but has struggled under Mikel Arteta.

In fact, he has gone on successive loans to Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina, with another decision due on his future.

Recent reports have claimed that Torreira is likely to sign a long-term deal back in Serie A.

The former Sampdoria man has enjoyed his Fiorentina spell and proved a key influence in the team.

According to Gianluca di Marzio, though, the deal has now fallen through. Indeed, Fiorentina tried and failed to seal a discounted deal with Arsenal for the midfielder.

They had the option to buy Torreira for €15million (£12.6million). They wanted a cheaper deal, but Arsenal have not relented and so will have to find the player a new club.

It looks unlikely that Torreira will have any part to play in Arteta’s future project at the Emirates Stadium.

Torreira’s exile from the team has come amid Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka becoming the solid duo in midfield for Arsenal.

Torreira has played 31 Serie A games for Fiorentina this season, contributing five goals and two assists.

He has been in strong form of late, scoring three times and laying on another goal in his previous seven outings.

However, the 26-year-old’s future is now set to take a different path.

With only one year left on Torreira’s contract, Arsenal face a big decision over the midfielder’s future.

If he does not feature in Arteta’s plans, they could look to sell to avoid losing him for free next summer.
