Louis van Gaal 'forced' into Gini Wijnaldum call as ex-Liverpool star's PSG struggles continue

Former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum is set to be dropped by the Netherlands national team.

The Reds allowed the midfielder to leave Anfield as a free agent last summer, where he linked up with Paris Saint-Germain. The 31-year-old spent five years at Anfield, during which time he scored 22 goals in 237 appearances.

However, since his move to Paris, Wijnaldum has not enjoyed as much success as he would have envisaged. Apart from helping PSG win the Ligue 1 title, from a personal perspective he has been restricted to 36 appearances and just three goals.

Wijnaldum has had just one start in PSG’s last seven matches. It’s this lack of regular action that has apparently led to him being dropped by Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal for the Nations League matches against Belgium, Wales and Poland next month.

The former Manchester United manager says dropping the ex-Liverpool midfielder is a “difficult" decision.

"Unfortunately, little has changed in Gini's situation at his club since our last two international matches in March,” Van Gaal told Dutch outlet VI.

“As a result, I am forced to make other choices, no matter how difficult and regrettable I personally find it.”
