The 20-year-old centre-back is worried that following Erik ten Hag to Old Trafford this summer could put his World Cup dream in jeopardy. He is now agonising over whether to call the deal off - although a compromise that would see him join the Reds during the winter transfer window is also on the table.

Timber has seen Dutch boss Louis van Gaal ruthlessly axe former Liverpool star Gini Wijnaldum from his squad for this month’s quartet of Nations League internationals because the midfielder has struggled for game-time at Paris St Germain.

And the youngster fears that he could be left out of Van Gaal’s selection for Qatar in November if he is unable to nail down a regular place in Ten Hag’s United team. United captain Harry Maguire, French World Cup winner Raphael Varane and Swedish international Victor Lindelof will all provide Timber with fierce opposition if he moves to Manchester. At just 5ft 9in, it is possible that he would need time to adapt to the physical nature of the Premier League.

And he believes that playing for Ajax in the Champions League next season will trump a Europa League campaign with United - especially if he takes time to settle at Old Trafford. Ten Hag
