Loughborough Lightning is 'exciting' new challenge for ex-Sirens star
Niamh McCall has left Strathclyde Sirens to sign for Netball Super League rivals Loughborough Lightning for the 2024 season.
The 23-year-old from Strathaven was with Sirens for five years, having started in 2018, aged 18, but is excited about trying different things in England.
She said: “Moving clubs will expose me to different things, and getting a new training environment and team is going to be exciting, and I’m really excited for it.”
McCall enjoyed some good performances at the Netball World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, as Scottish Thistles achieved a 10th-placed finish, with Niamh player of the match in wins over Barbados and Fiji.
Lightning are delighted to have signed the international star, and said in a social media announcement on Tuesday: “We’re so pleased to welcome Scottish Thistle Niamh McCall to the 2024 Lightning squad.
“With experience on the international stage, Niamh is a fantastic addition to this year’s shooting unit.”
They also quoted McCall as saying: “I’m super excited to be joining the Lightning family next season.
“To learn from coaches and players that are two-time Super League champions is an incredible opportunity and I’m looking forward to seeing what I can bring to the group.”
Also leaving Sirens is Emma Barrie from Stonehouse, alongside Beth Dix, Abi Robson, Abby Tyrrell, Stella Oyella, Helen Taylor, Claire Maxwell and Natalie Bright, with Sirens saying: “The departing players have collectively been part of Sirens from day one and boast an impressive 313 caps.
“Niamh McCall, affectionately referred to as the ‘Long Bomb Queen’ for her incredible long-distance shots, is venturing into new horizons.
