Lost possession 17 times: Alasdair Gold rips into 4/10 Tottenham star

Alasdair Gold has lambasted the performance of right wing-back Emerson Royal in Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat on Wednesday night.

The Lilywhites suffered a torrid night in north London on Wednesday night as Southampton came from behind late on in the game to seal the points.

And it was apparent Gold was not left impressed by the display of Emerson with the Brazilian awarded a 4/10 rating for his defensive frailties in the home side’s capitulation.

“Allowed the ball to run across his body instead of clearing in the lead up to the visitor’s leveller. Was nowhere near Elyounoussi or Adams for the second and third goals for the visitors. Southampton targeted his side and you could see why,” wrote Gold.

It was certainly a night to forget for the right wing-back who lost the ball 17 times on the night and failed to find a man with either of his two crosses (via SofaScore).

Southampton dominated the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with 23 shots and the dropped points dealt a huge blow to the Lilywhites in their race for the top four.

Going into the game on the weekend against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Spurs now sit level on points on Arsenal with the same games played – albeit with the Gunners playing Wolves on Thursday night.

TIF Thoughts on Emerson…

Conte reportedly went into the January window wanting a new right wing-back having been left unimpressed by the Brazilian he had inherited when he took the job.

And Conte’s frustrations will have been evident on Wednesday night with the 23-year-old having a role to play in all three of Southampton’s goals on the night.

Going into the summer window, this will surely be an area that Conte will be pushing to address with both Djed Spence and Tariq Lamptey over the January window.
