London E-Prix: Lucas di Grassi seals first win of the season

Lucas di Grassi took victory in the second race at the London E-Prix on Sunday afternoon, denying Jake Dennis a double at the ExCel centre.

Race one on Saturday saw Dennis take pole and victory at the indoor/outdoor venue in east London, with him clearly enjoying the unique track having won there in 2021 as well.

Indeed, he was looking to make it double race win weekend on Sunday and was in prime position to do so as he sealed pole in qualifying, but in the race he was to be denied by di Grassi, who earned his first victory of the season, with Dennis in second and Nyck de Vries in third.

Speaking after the race, the victorious Brazilian said:

“It means everything.

“Thank you everybody for being here. Congratulations to all my competitors, all the great drivers out there. It was a massive fight with Jake. It was very strategic – using Attack Mode at the right moment, saving energy at the right moment. The team gave me the perfect feedback. The car was amazing today and after what happened yesterday, I think we deserve it very much.

“It depends really how you use energy as well – it’s not only Attack Mode. So today, we usedAttack Mode to create the right energy buffer and then when the time was right, we used the energy and opened the gap and just kept it from there.

“Jake was struggling a little bit to the rear of his car I think and I saw that if I could push for two orthree laps was enough because here was very hard to overtake. So thanks to the guys that made itthe perfect car today.”

In terms of the championship, meanwhile, it’s now very much Stoffel Vandoorne’s to lose.

The Mercedes EQ driver finished fourth in race two to extend his championship lead to 36 points, with now just two races left to go at the final
