Liz Cambage signs for Los Angeles Sparks

Australian four-time All-Star centre Liz Cambage has been signed by the Los Angeles Sparks in their bid to push for the WNBA title.

"It has always been my dream to wear the Purple & Gold and play in LA," Cambage said in a news release on Friday.

"I'm ready to pour everything I have into this team and the legendary Sparks fans."

The 2.03-metre tall former Opals' star has averaged 16.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks through five WNBA seasons.

"The Sparks organisation is ecstatic to partner with a dynamic person and player in Liz Cambage who will elevate the franchise on and off the court," general manager and head coach Derek Fisher said.

"At her best, Liz is the most dominant women's basketball player in the world. She scores efficiently inside, can stretch the floor, and is a good passer.

"She's also one of the league's best rim protectors and rebounds at a high level. The addition of Liz, along with our other off-season moves, puts us in a position to compete for a WNBA championship."

The 30-year-old averaged 14.2 points and 8.2 rebounds in 25 games - 24 starts - last season for the Las Vegas Aces.

"From Sin City to the City of Angels, thank you for everything," the Aces posted on Twitter on Friday.

The Tulsa Shock drafted Cambage with the No.2 overall pick in 2011 and she led the WNBA in scoring with the Dallas Wings in 2018, averaging 23.0 points per game.

Two-time Olympian Cambage effectively shut the door on her Australian international career last year, having rejected the chance to play in the World Cup this year.
