Liverpool win vs Southampton could give Man City fans exactly what they want

The Premier League title race is officially going down to the wire.

After Liverpool came from behind to beat Southampton on Tuesday evening, Manchester City must now win on the final day of the season to guarantee a fourth title victory in five years. However, anything but three points against Aston Villa will leave their fate in the hands of Jurgen Klopp's side.

If the majority of City fans had got their way, then this situation would not have happened. Rather than endure the pressure and anxiety of a must-win game against a side managed by a Liverpool legend, plenty of Blues would have happily seen Southampton do them a favour and hand the title to City without Pep Guardiola's side having to kick a ball.

As they've made a habit of doing, Liverpool found a way to win when it really mattered, despite Klopp heavily rotating his team. However, perhaps that isn't such a bad thing.

City now have the chance to clinch the title, in front of a packed Etihad Stadium, for the first time since 2014. The final day of the 2013/14 season was the last time the Blues did that, a 2-0 win against West Ham getting them over the line. City have won three league crowns in the eight years since but, remarkably, none have been decided in front of a home crowd.

In 2018 City spurned the chance to win the title by beating Manchester United in the derby, and were instead crowned champions when United lost to West Brom a week later.

The 2019 title run-in bears a striking resemblance to this season's with City leading Liverpool by a point and needing a win on the final day to finish the job. They got that win, but it came in front of a few thousand
