Darwin Nunez is a stunning mix of his fellow Uruguay strikers Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani - and just as deadly.
That is the view of his Benfica team-mate and former Premier League star Adel Taarabt, who is convinced his friend is going to make an equally massive impact at Anfield as Suarez did. Former QPR midfielder Taarabt admitted he had no idea who Nunez was when he signed for Benfica two years ago from unfancied Almeria in Spain.
But the record fee the Portuguese club paid was a club record…and the striker soon set about proving why. “When Benfica bought him from Almeria for a big fee, nobody knew him and a lot of people were surprised,” Taarabt explained. “But when we saw him in the first training we understood that he was going to be one of the best strikers in the world.
“Darwin has a mix of Cavani and Suarez, he can jump, he can go behind, for me he’s a mix of both. He has that mentality of South Americans, he likes to win, he’s a winner, he fights, he’s very very fast and strong as well.”
