Liverpool legend makes claim about ‘struggling’ Salah before City game

Liverpool legend John Aldridge does not think Mohamed Salah should start against Man City this Sunday as “he is struggling” at the moment.

Salah made a sensational start to this season and he has arguably been the Premier League’s best player in 2021/22.

But his form has dipped in recent weeks. He has not scored from open play in the league since Liverpool hammered Leeds 6-0 on February 23.

Liverpool’s biggest game of the season takes place this weekend as they travel to face Man City at the Etihad.

The Reds are currently one point behind Pep Guardiola’s side in the table with eight games to go.

Aldridge does not think Salah warrants a place in Liverpool’s starting XI as “he’s not been himself” recently:

“If you are going by form, Mo would not get in the team. As great as he is and as much as we love him, he is struggling,” Aldridge told Sky Sports.

“Now people might say that he has had his head turned, but he has got this contract situation, which does not help. He has not scored from open play for six weeks and he’s just not himself on the pitch.

“I don’t know why that is. But come Sunday, if he is on the pitch, [Liverpool] need him like never before. It’s the biggest game of the season by far. Mo needs to be at his best. Hopefully that will happen but he’s struggling at the moment.”

Meanwhile, former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel isn’t sure how Salah would get on in La Liga if he was to make the move to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

“It’s difficult to say from the outside. I know he’s a brilliant player for Liverpool. For me it’s a question of what he wants to do. Is he still happy at Liverpool or does he want to see something different?
