Liverpool fear 'eradicated' as dangerous reset sends warning to Man City
It's hardly an approach Jurgen Klopp would advocate. But narrowly missing out on a major honour has often been the best thing for Liverpool during his time in charge.
The evidence is compelling. Having been beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League final in 2018, the Reds defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the showpiece 12 months later. That came mere weeks after Klopp's side were pipped to the Premier League title by Manchester City, only to romp home the following year for a first championship since 1990.
Even the 2016 Europa League final loss to Sevilla, which blocked a shortcut back into the Champions League, provided the catalyst for qualification for the competition the next season through the more traditional route of a top-four finish.
That ability to instantly respond and avoid the kind of hangover that did for Brendan Rodgers after the 2013/14 campaign - and, to some extent, Rafael Benitez post 2008/09 - has been a hallmark of Liverpool under Klopp. And it will act as encouragement as the Reds look to banish the disappointment of the final days of last season when they were again thwarted by City and Real Madrid.
