Liverpool fan sprayed with tear gas by police while showing Champions League final ticket

Footage has emerged of French police using tear gas on Liverpool supporters as they tried to enter the Stade de France for the Champions League final on Saturday.

The final between Liverpool and Real Madrid was marred by delays and aggressive behaviour towards Liverpool fans, many of whom have shared awful stories of events in Paris.

Former Liverpool player Jason McAteer tweeted on Sunday: “Last night was disgusting. My son attacked, my wife mugged. @UEFAcom very accountable as well as ground stewards and French police.”

Kick-off was delayed by 35 minutes and Vinicius Jr.’s second-half goal ensured it was an evening to forget for the travelling Liverpool supporters.

In a statement, UEFA blamed the disruptions on fans who arrived at the stadium with fake tickets.

“In the lead-up to the game, the turnstiles at the Liverpool end became blocked by thousands of fans who had purchased fake tickets which did not work in the turnstiles,” the statement read.

“This created a build-up of fans trying to get in. As a result, the kick off was delayed by 35 minutes to allow as many fans as possible with genuine tickets to gain access.

“As numbers outside the stadium continued to build up after kick off, the police dispersed them with tear gas and forced them away from the stadium.”

However, many in attendance have pointed the blame squarely at the feet of the governing body.

The Athletic’s James Pearce reported: “Nonsense for UEFA to suggest this is down to fans arriving late. 

“I know LFC fans who arrived at Stade de France two and a half hours ago and have only just got inside the ground. Complete lack of organisation. Dangerous bottlenecks.”

Liverpool have requested an investigation and questions must be asked about why tear gas was
