Live updates as Welsh steelworkers are set march to save their jobs
Hundreds of South Wales steelworkers were expected to take to the streets today for a series of rallies in support of the industry. Communities in Port Talbot and Newport have organised the events in response to nearly 3,000 proposed job losses across Tata Steel's UK operations.
At 11am, Llanwern steelworkers will march through Newport city centre. While at Port Talbot, a public rally will start at 1.15pm in the town’s Civic Centre Square. The assembled crowd is set to be addressed by local politicians, union representatives from Port Talbot steelworks and officials including Community union’s general secretary, Roy Rickhuss.
It comes after it was announced that there are 2,800 proposed job losses across Tata Steel's UK operations. On Friday, February 2, the company launched its formal 45-day consultation on its proposals for Tata Steel sites, which included Port Talbot, Llanwern and Trostre. The leading trade union for the UK steel industry, Community, has informed the company that unions will not be bound by the 45 days, and has said that consultations "should and will take as long as necessary". On Friday, February 16, senior officials of Community passed a resolution to ballot for industrial action in response to the threat of job losses.
