Live updates as Senedd members vote on bid to stop Wales' 20mph default speed limit

Opposition politicians are today trying to get the planned default 20mph speed limit for Wales thrown out, just days before it is due to come into force. The Labour-run Welsh Government say the law, which comes into force on Sunday, September 17, will make roads safer and "improve the quality of life for everyone".

Conservative politicians will hold a 60 minute debate, followed by a vote, to try get the law thrown out. However, the political make-up of the Senedd means it is unlikely to pass. The debate calls for the Welsh Government to "repeal The Restricted Roads (20 mph Speed Limit) (Wales) Order 2022".

Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Transport, Natasha Asghar MS said the policy "will have a detrimental impact on our economy, emergency services, and the livelihoods of the people in Wales" and it is a "ludicrous and dangerous policy".

"With the Labour Government’s own explanatory memorandum to their 20mph bill stating that 20mph speed limits will cost the economy up to a whopping £9 billion, it’s time for Labour to focus on the people’s priorities, which they continue to neglect. We believe this money would be better spent on more doctors, more teachers, and more nurses."

However, in the Senedd chamber on Tuesday, the deputy minister in charge of the policy, Lee Waters said that there has previously been support from cross-party politicians, including Conservative politicians.

Mr Waters said: "Change is never easy, and as we have got closer to 17 September, and with greater awareness of the speed limit coming into effect, concerns are being surfaced, and people’s natural anxieties about change have not been helped by the blatant misinformation being cynically spread by the Conservatives in Wales.
