Live updates as residents evacuated after 'hazardous substance' found
A busy road in Newport has been closed and residents have been evacuated from their homes after a "hazardous substance" was found. Gwent Police have closed Corporation Road in Newport after the substance was found at an address in Clarence Place.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have joined the police on the scene to assist officers with the examination and disposal of the substance. Gwent Police have stated that the potentially hazardous substance has been contained safely and does not pose a risk.
A cordon has been put in place to ensure public safety and residents have been evacuated from their properties. The incident has happened between St Vincent Road and B4591 Chepstow Road.
Superintendent Stephen Drayton said: "The potentially hazardous substance is contained safely at this time and there is no ongoing risk posed to members of the community.
"Our officers will remain at the scene to ensure the public’s safety but it is possible that there will be some disruption linked to this matter. We’re working with our partners to bring this to a safe conclusion as quickly as possible and I’d like to thank the public for their patience and co-operation at this time."
