Live updates as findings of damning independent WRU review revealed

A report into misogyny and sexism in the Welsh Rugby Union has laid bare some serious issues within Welsh rugby’s governing body. Comments such as men being the “master race”, women being referred to as “sugar t**s” and suggestions that women had slept their way into jobs were all highlighted as part of the report.

It also highlighted homophobia directed at Wales’ women's team with slurs about players' sexuality, including a comment made to a woman going to see her boyfriend that she “plays for the right team”. It was also highly critical of the governance within the WRU saying the board was “dysfunctional, ill-equipped and unable to address the serious institutional and cultural problems it faced”.

Allegations of sexism and misogyny hit the WRU earlier this year when the BBC aired an investigation detailing allegations from former employees. A review as a result of that took just over seven months to conduct and has now been concluded, putting forward around 36 recommendations in total. The WRU said it fully accepts the report's findings and is "already committed" to ensuring that all are actioned. New WRU chair Richard Collier-Keywood said: “I want to start by saying again that on behalf of the whole WRU, we are truly sorry to those who have been impacted by the systems, structures and conduct described in the report which are simply not acceptable. We have to do better and we will.”

The report, which spoke to dozens of people both inside and outside the organisation, said there “are two striking and unusual aspects to this review”.
