Live updates as crash causes 'severe' nine-mile tailbacks on M4 near Newport

An accident involving a lorry has closed two lanes of a busy part of the M4 near Newport, causing severe delays of nearly an hour and queues of more than nine miles. It has happened on the eastbound carriageway between junction 24 Coldra and junction 23A Magor Services.

The traffic cameras are showing long delays in the area as a result. Traffic monitoring system Inrix is showing "severe" delays with delays of up to 50 minutes. Congestion is back to junction 25 Caerleon.

Traffic Wales says: "Severe delays in the area, plan ahead if you're travelling this morning and allow additional time for your journey."

Gwent Police said the lorry is involved and recovery has been requested. Traffic is being held to allow the recovery teams work at the scene.

It is the second accident on the eastbound carriageway today. An accident closed one lane during rush hour near junction 27 Highcross.
