Live updates as M4 closed one way near Newport due to police incident

A police incident has seen a stretch of the M4 near Newport close during heavy Bank Holiday traffic.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix said at 5.46pm on Friday: "M4 Eastbound closed, queueing traffic due to police incident between J26 A4051 (Malpas Road) and J24 A449 (Coldra)... Westbound side has now been re-opened. Eastbound remains closed."

The road has been closed since 5.30pm according to Inrix. One local resident tweeted that they could hear a helicopter overhead and "loads of police sirens". You can get more traffic and travel news and other story updates by subscribing to our newsletters here.

The A40 in Crickhowell is also closed in both directions, with traffic queuing due to an incident between A4077 New Road and A479 Tretower turn-off.
