Live updates as 20mph speed limit protest held in Cardiff

Protesters gathered in the centre of Cardiff on Saturday afternoon to protest against the introduction of a default 20mph speed limit in residential areas of Wales. Polling shows the majority of people in Wales continue to oppose the policy. While not all restricted roads will be 20mph, and local authorities will have the power to change routes back to 30mph if they see fit it is predicted that as a result of the new law the number of 30mph roads in Wales will drop from 37% of the make-up of Wales' roads to 3%. First Minister Mark Drakeford has made the Welsh Labour government's feelings clear in the Senedd this week. When he was asked about the petition in the Senedd chamber and whether he would consider overturning the new law, he said "no". While Counsel General Mick Antoniw has said time was needed for it to bed in. "We've just introduced changes – we need to allow them to bed in and I'm confident they will be workable and people will accept them," he said.
