LIVE: Travel chaos as tram and train passengers hit by disruption in Greater Manchester - updates

Tram and rail passengers have been hit by major disruption following two incidents ahead of rush hour.

No Northern trains are running between Ashburys, in east Manchester, and Romiley today (September 24) following a 'points failure'.

National Rail says the major disruption is expected to last throughout the day, with engineers working at the scene.

A National Rail spokesperson said: "A points failure between Ashburys and Romiley via Bredbury means that all lines are blocked.

"As a result of this, trains that run between Manchester Piccadilly and Romiley via Bredbury are cancelled between these stations and will be diverted where possible via Guide Bridge.

"Disruption is expected until the end of the day. Network Rail engineers are on site."

Some rail replacement services are in operation at Ashburys and Romiley as a result of the incident.

Meanwhile, there are severe delays on the Rochdale Metrolink line this morning.

It comes after trams were suspended between Rochdale Town Centre and Freehold, in Oldham, due to a 'comms fault'.

No services were calling at Westwood, Oldham King Street, Oldham Central, Oldham Mumps, Derker, Shar and Crompton, Newhey, Milnrow, Kingsway Business Park, Newbold, Rochdale Railway Station or Rochdale Town Centre.

Trams are now running again with 'severe delays' affecting the entire line, between Rochdale and East Didsbury, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring service.

A Bee Network spokesperson wrote on X: "Following an earlier communications fault at Shaw and Crompton, services are operating with delay on the Oldham and Rochdale
