Live traffic and travel updates as Met Office weather warning forecasts rain for parts of Wales

More heavy rain could bring travel disruption and flooding across south Wales on Friday. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain covering the area which runs until midnight, following a similar alert on Thursday.

The forecasting agency says that heavy rain may lead to some travel disruption and flooding in places and that it is likely further warnings will be issued across the weekend. The Met Office has also given its verdict on the reported mini UK heatwave later this month.

There are very difficult driving conditions on the M4 on Friday morning, with a crash closing the road between junction 49 of the M4 at Pont Abraham and the A483 in Carmarthenshire. Traffic Wales says: "Closed in both directions due to collision. Police at scene . Updates will be issued. Please find alternative route at this time."

There was also heavy congestion heading westbound during the rush hour after vehicle broke down in the Newport area. One lane was closed westbound between junction 25 Caerleon and junction 25A Grove Park.

Today, the amount of rainfall falling in the warning area could take the total falling on parts of the affected area to between 50 and 100mm in 48 hours - Okehampton in Devon seeing 44.4mm on Thursday. Commuters are warned to expect spray and sudden flooding, leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: "The outbreaks of rain that we've seen arrive through Thursday across the south and south west will essentially keep going during Friday and into the weekend. There will be ebbs and flows in the rainfall. There'll be pulses of heavier rain at times and then lighter rain at times."
