LIVE: Ryebank Fields 'standoff' as residents 'guard entrance' of controversial development - updates

Protesters have gathered at a controversial green space development site on the border of south Manchester and Trafford as they claim diggers are about to move in. Locals have been fighting against the proposed development of Ryebank Fields, where Chorlton meets Old Trafford, for years.

Step Places and Southway Housing last year launched a consultation over the land, which is owned by Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) after being gifted to them in the 1970s, to bring forward plans to build a residential development including 120 homes.

The plans included the retention of 1.3 hectares of the parkland, as well as a 250 sq. m central community hub surrounded by a market square and growing spaces, a nature path walkway, new habitats, a 1:7 planting policy across the whole site and 2.1 hectares of green space across the development to support local biodiversity.

However, opponents labelled them 'greenwashing..' Campaigners claim that MMU contractors are set to arrive at the site arrive with diggers to "carry out invasive site investigations." They say birds nesting in the site will be disturbed amongst concerns about public health.

A number of them have gathered to "guard the entrance" in Chorlton. MMU have been contacted for comment.
