A police scene is in place after a 14-year-old boy was stabbed as he answered the door.

The 'sickening' incident happened on Stovell Avenue, on the border of Levenshulme and Longsight, at around 8pm last night (Monday). Police said the schoolboy was stabbed after answering a knock at the door.

He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. An attempted murder investigation has been launched.

A 15-year-old boy and 41-year-old woman have both been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Both remain in police custody to be quizzed by detectives.

A scene remains in place on the street as investigations are carried out. Police said the probe is 'progressing at pace'.

The attack was believed to be 'targeted'. Any witnesses, or anyone with information, is being urged to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Davies from GMP’s City of Manchester district said: “This is a really sickening attack on a young boy which has left him in a critical condition in hospital.

"I would like to reassure the community that our investigation is progressing at a pace and this morning two people, a 15-year-old boy and a 41-year-old female, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Enquiries continue to piece together the full circumstances of what has occurred and who is involved in the attack.

"We believe this is a targeted attack and there is no risk to the wider public.
