LIVE: Police cordon off flats as man found dead after fire breaks out

A man has been found dead after a fire broke out in a flat in the early hours of today.

Emergency services blocked off a road in Leigh this morning following a blaze at the flat on Railway Road.

Fire crews, police, and paramedics raced to the scene at around 3.45am on Monday (February 24).

Tragically, Greater Manchester Police have now confirmed a man died.

"At around 4am today (Monday 24 February 2025) we were called to Railway Road in Leigh to assist Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue with a fire at a property," a spokesperson said.

"After conducting initial enquiries, sadly a man was found deceased and subsequently an investigation has been launched by our detectives.

"No arrests have been made at this stage, but enquiries are still in their early stages and ongoing with a scene remaining place that will impact the local area.

"Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident 287 of 24/02/2025. Alternatively, details can be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Crews remain in attendance with Railway Road blocked between Bradshawgate and Jaffrey Street. Witnesses report hearing sirens in the early hours as emergency services raced to the scene.
