LIVE: Police and fire crews evacuate homes on Bolton street after 'item of concern' found - updates

Police and fire crews scrambled to a street in Bolton this afternoon after an 'item of concern' was uncovered at a property. Connaught Square, off Eldon Street has been taped off, with some homes even evacuated.

Specialist explosive disposal units have also been called to the scene. The road remains closed off this evening (July 7) with a heavy emergency services presence, with some unable to get back to their houses.

An update to the GMP Bolton North page alerted those nearby to the commotion. It read: "We’re currently with colleagues from the fire service at an address on Connaught Square after a report of an item of concern.

"A number of nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution while EOD make an assessment of the item."

The Manchester Evening News has contacted Greater Manchester Police and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service for more information on this ongoing incident.

It is understood residents, who were told to leave their homes earlier, have now been allowed to return back to their houses again.

There is not believed to be any danger or wider threat to the community.

The M.E.N now understands the incident this evening is related to a fire at a flat at the address yesterday.

The item of concern has since been identified and EOD are checking it out as a precaution currently.

Police confirmed one man was taken last night to hospital with minor burns following the fire. No arrests have been made.
