Live M66 update: road closed due to multi-vehicle collision

National Highways have closed the M66 northbound between Junction 1 (A56, Walmersley Road) and the A56 (Edenfield).

It has been reported that there has been a multi-vehicle collision on that stretch of motorway, although Inrix report there has been an overturned car. Traffic was temporarily stopped, but now the road has been closed.

Motorists have been advised to take alternative routes until the road is opened again. Diversion routes are in operation.

National Highways: North West originally tweeted: "The #M66 northbound between J2 ( #A58 / #Bury ) and J1 ( #A56 / #Summerseat ), traffic has been temporarily STOPPED due to a multi-vehicle collision. We will keep you updated."

Later they added: "UPDATE: The #M66 northbound between J2 ( #A58 / #Bury ) and J1 ( #A56 / #Summerseat ) is now CLOSED. Further details to follow."

Their most recent update, reads: "UPDATE: The #M66 is now closed northbound between J1 ( #Summerseat ) and the #A56 ( #Edenfield ). For further information including the diversion route details, please head over to nationalhighways.co.uk/travel-updates."
