Live M66 traffic updates as 'police incident' that left woman seriously injured leaves motorway blocked

A woman has been seriously injured following an incident on the M66 motorway.

Police and paramedics were called to concerns for welfare of a woman at around 2pm on Friday afternoon (May 9).

The motorway was blocked in both directions around Junction 1 and has now reopened, although delays continue in the area.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 2pm today (9 May 2025), officers responded to reports regarding the concern for the welfare of a female, around junction 1 of the M66.

"She has been taken to hospital with serious injuries, and roads have now been reopened."

Inrix, the traffic data company, said: "Long delays due to earlier incident on M66 in both directions from J1 A56 Walmersley Road (Ramsbottom) to A56 (Ramsbottom Junction). All lanes have been reopened to traffic."

A woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following reports regarding the concern for her welfare, according to police.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "At around 2pm today (9 May 2025), officers responded to reports regarding the concern for the welfare of a female, around junction 1 of the M66.

"She has been taken to hospital with serious injuries, and roads have now been reopened."

All lanes have been reopened to traffic but long delays remain, according to reports.

There are reports of delays lasting up to 29 minutes Northbound on the M66 due to the incident.
