LIVE M6 closed in both directions after crash as police warn delays to continue 'for some time'

A stretch of the M6 motorway is fully shut this afternoon after a crash.

The road is fully closed off in both directions between junction 32 and junction 33. Preston Police have urged motorists to avoid the area and warned the motorway is set to be shut for some time.

A statement by Preston Police released this afternoon says: “MOTORWAY CLOSED. The M6 J32-J33 is closed in both directions due to a road traffic collision.

"We anticipate this will be closed for some time. Please avoid the area and use an alternative route where possible. We’ll provide an update once cleared and thank you in advance for your patience.”

No time has been given on when the carriageway will reopen, according to a spokesperson from National Highways on X, formerly Twitter.

In response to a question from the member of the public on when the motorway will reopen the spokesperson said:

“No time has been given when the carriageway will reopen. Trapped traffic is currently be released by emergency services.”

Normal traffic conditions are now not expected until between 10.30pm and 10.45pm J33 and J32 on the M6, according to National Highways.
