LIVE: Key moment for Awaab's Law campaign as MPs discuss Bill - latest updates from the Commons

MPs are debating Awaab's Law for the first time this afternoon as crucial changes to legislation are put forward. Awaab Ishak died aged two in December 2020 following prolonged exposure to mould in his Rochdale social home, which the landlord failed to resolve.

The Manchester Evening News has been campaigning alongside representatives of Awaab's family for a law change in his name since the toddler's inquest last November, with the support of Shelter. A change.org petition for the campaigning received more than 170,000 signatures.

Last month, housing secretary Michael Gove announced amendments to the Social Housing (Regulation) Bill which would put into statute the need for housing associations to meet set timeframes for inspecting damp and mould, and carrying out urgent repairs. The exact timeframes would be set following consultation later this year.

Further amendments to the Bill will also see clear information provided to tenants on their rights, while guidance is being issued to the housing sector on the health and safety risks of mould later this year. Following extensive campaigning by Grenfell United, the Bill will also require housing managers to have professional qualifications for their role, while social landlords will be subject to Ofsted-style inspections.

After speaking to Mr Gove last month, Awaab's father, Faisal Abdullah, said: "We would like to express our thanks to Michael Gove and his team for listening to us and doing the right thing. My wife and I still struggle to deal with the loss of our son, but we are finally starting to feel like we are being treated fairly.
