LIVE: Jewish day centre cordoned off by police after 'suspicious substance found in envelope' - latest updates

A Jewish day centre has been cordoned off by police after reports of a 'suspicious substance found in an envelope'.

The Nicky, a day centre for Jewish adults, on Middleton Road, is currently taped off. The entrance to the car park is cordoned off, with at least five marked police cars, two unmarked police cars and two ambulances on the scene.

The building is directly opposite the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue where a terror attack was carried out on October 2, though Greater Manchester Police have said there is no wider risk to the public at this time.

A spokesperson said the day centre has been evacuated 'as a precaution after a suspicious substance was found in an envelope'. Everyone who was in the building 'appears safe and well'.

In full, the GMP statement said: "We've evacuated an address on Middleton Road as a precaution after a suspicious substance was found in an envelope.

"All occupants appear safe and well at this time, and we're working with emergency services to ensure everyone's safety.

"You will see emergency services in the area and we know the concern this may cause after the events at the nearby Heaton Park synagogue earlier this month.

"However, there is no wider risk at this time. Enquiries are ongoing."
