LIVE: Huge plume of smoke spotted over Greater Manchester as fire crews tackle blaze in Bury

Fire crews are tackling a huge blaze in Bury this evening. The fire is thought to have broken out at a building in Radcliffe, on Tuesday evening (May 31), with huge clouds of black smoke seen billowing from the scene.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said they are currently at the scene of a fire on Milltown Street.

They warned the fire is generating a large plume of smoke and residents in the area are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

Onlookers reported seeing huge numbers of fire units, as crews rushed to tackle the flames. Pictures shared to social media showed the clouds of thick smoke could be seen from a distance as they swelled over the city.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for more information, as have Greater Manchester Police.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said:

Just after 9:15pm this evening (Tuesday 31 May) we were called to reports of a fire at a commercial premises on Milltown Street, Radcliffe. Eight fire engines were quickly mobilised to the scene, where crews found a single-storey building well alight and generating a significant plume of smoke. Firefighters are currently working hard to tackle the blaze in sectors using jets and hose reels. Residents in the area are advised to keep their windows and doors closed at this time.”
