LIVE: Flood warnings in place with Manchester Airport flights also hit by life-threatening weather - latest updates

There are a number of flood warnings in place across Greater Manchester this morning.

Eight warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency on Wednesday morning as the region is hit by a barrage of heavy rain. The warnings, the second most severe that can be issued, all cover the River Irk from Cheetham Hill to Chadderton Fold.

The Environment Agency has said: "Rising river levels are expected to cause flooding this morning. Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Irk, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around properties adjacent to the River Irk. We are closely monitoring the situation and monitoring rainfall and river levels.

"Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses. Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water."

The warnings mean residents should 'act now', with the Environment Agency warning that people should 'protect yourself and your loved ones'.

Manchester Airport flights have also been hit by a US storm, with a number of cancellations in place. Flights between Manchester Airport and Florida have been cancelled as the US braces for Hurricane Milton. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said there was an increasing risk of a life-threatening storm surge on the west coast, and heavy rainfall and high winds are expected to impact large parts of Florida.

It comes as rain is expected to fall across Greater Manchester for most of the day as an area of low pressure sweeps over. More wet conditions are expected though the day, with lighter showers predicted to fall through the rest of the morning and into the afternoon.
