LIVE: Car bursts into flames on M60 with two lanes closed - updates

There are delays on the M60 this evening after a car burst into flames. Two lanes are currently closed on the clockwise carriageway between junctions J17 and J18.

The incident has caused traffic to build up along the motorway as fire crews and motorway police attend the scene and deal with the incident.

Photos shared with the M.E.N show the car on the hard shoulder of the motorway completely alight. There are 'severe delays' due to the ongoing incident.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix has warned drivers of long delays on the M60 right now.

All lanes have now reopened but the congestion is still there.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly before 17.45pm this evening (Tuesday, 5 March), two fire engines from Whitefield and Broughton fire stations were called to a car fire on the M60 between junctions 17 and 18.

“Crews arrived quickly and used one hose reel and one breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire.

“Firefighters made the area safe before departing after approximately 45 minutes at the scene.”

Highways England said two lanes are closed due to the ongoing blaze tonight.

They said a 'vehicle fire' is ongoing on the M60 clockwise between junctions J17 and J18.

Live traffic service Inrix said: "Severe delays and two lanes closed due to vehicle fire on M60 clockwise at J17 A56 Bury New Road (Prestwich / Whitefield). Congestion to M60 J10 (Trafford Centre).

"Delays not helped by usual afternoon traffic."
