LIVE as police and paramedics block main road after person struck by HGV - latest updates

Police and paramedics have blocked off a main road in Oldham this afternoon following a person being hit by a HGV.

An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene, on Manchester Road, with a heavy police presence also currently in attendance following the collision this afternoon. The road is blocked off northbound between Old Lane and Frederick Street.

Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service have been approached for details.

Investigations remain ongoing at the scene of the collision this evening.

Police attended to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a heavy goods vehicle.

A man, aged in his 70s, was rushed to hospital from the scene.

A witness who lives nearby said she heard a loud 'screeching' sound moments before the pedestrian was hit this afternoon.

A man, in his 70s, was rushed to hospital after the HGV ploughed into him on Manchester Road.

"I was in the kitchen at around 12:30pm making lunch and the window was open. I heard screeching and what sounded like a big vehicle breaking hard.

"I looked out of the window and saw a HGV with an open back full of beams.

"The air ambulance flew over our home into the park around 1pm. I am praying the man recovers and I didn't realise someone got run over until hours later."

Manchester Road has now been taped off amid investigations into the earlier crash.

Police remain at the scene and are expected to for some time this evening.

We understand the victim, a man in his 70s, has been rushed to Salford Royal Hospital.
