Lisandro Martinez has explained why his arrival is a double boost to Erik ten Hag and Man United

As well as strengthening their defence with the signing of Lisandro Martinez, previous quotes from the latest Manchester United signing show they have bolstered their midfield options as well.

Erik ten Hag took a step closer to adding a third new face to his squad on Sunday after United announced a deal with Ajax had been agreed for the transfer of Martinez. The Argentine will cost the club an initial £46.8million, rising to £55.3m.

When the transfer is complete, Martinez will join left-back Tyrell Malacia and playmaker Christian Eriksen as new signings at Old Trafford. Ten Hag has pushed for the left-footed centre-back to bring balance and strength in depth to his back line.

After it became clear top target Jurrien Timber was staying at Ajax, Ten Hag turned his attention to another of his former players in Martinez. The club had scouted Villarreal's Pau Torres but backed their new manager by going for his own target. Although a centre-back, Martinez prides himself on being a versatile player who is capable of playing in midfield or even as a full-back and that sort of flexibility will be extremely useful to United.

Speaking to Argentinian newspaper Ole last year, he said: "I'm not closed to anything. The day I get to play central midfielder, I'll do it again. If that helps the team, I'm going to do it. The same as from the side (full-back). I consider myself a versatile player who is always predisposed to give the best beyond the position."
