'Like a dying dog' - Ben Foster backs decision to drop Man United captain Harry Maguire vs Liverpool

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire should be taken out of the firing line for an extended period of time by boss Erik ten Hag.

That's the verdict of former United goalkeeper Ben Foster, who says Maguire's dip in form means he should be rested for more than just one game.

The Red Devils' skipper was one of four players to make way during last Monday's win over Liverpool. The 29-year-old is understood to have accepted Ten Hag's decision to start with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane as his centre-back pairing in the Old Trafford win.

Now, former United stopper Foster believes Maguire should be left out of the firing line for the foreseeable.

“At that point, you’ve just got to pull them out of the firing line," Foster told talkSPORT.

“It’s just one thing after another. The best thing to do… it’s almost like a dying dog, just put them out of their misery. Take him out of the team, take him out of the spotlight, even if it’s just for four or five games.

“It could be a month or six weeks, but just take him out the firing line.”

Maguire has started in 102 of United's 118 Premier League matches since he arrived at the club from Leicester for £80million in 2019 and missed nine of those fixtures through injury or suspension.
