Liam Sheedy: 'Clued-in' Darragh Egan a great coup for Wexford

Liam Sheedy has hailed his managerial 'understudy' Darragh Egan, describing his appointment as Wexford boss as a "great coup" for the county following their stellar start to the Allianz Hurling League.

Egan's Wexford, already boasting a 100% record, made it three wins from three with a six-point victory over Leinster championship rivals Galway in Salthill on Sunday.

Egan was a panellist as a forward and back-up goalkeeper during Sheedy's first spell in charge and became a highly regarded member of the high-powered backroom team in Tipperary during his second, helping them to an All-Ireland title in 2019.

"He was my understudy on the managerial side of things," Sheedy said on the RTÉ GAA podcast. "He's a school principal, and he has been for a number of years, on his own doorstep.

"That tells you the high esteem he's held in his own locality and community. His club Kiladangan is a really good place. They've won their county senior title, they've won U19 and U20, junior and North (Tipperary) titles. There's a really good operating model in Kiladangan. Darragh didn't do that on his own but he was a big driving force.

"It was a great coup for Wexford to get him on board. Obviously, he's got Niall Corcoran and good people around him. He's doing a fine job.

"When you looked at the fixtures first, you'd have said 'Limerick coming to town first and then you're away to Clare and Galway. You could find yourself with no points.' And here he is now, sitting on six. That's a fantastic start. He's probably in a really strong position now to get in a league semi-final.

"All I ever got was drenched wet and blowing alive up there on the sideline in Salthill. I had a 100% record down there, played twice, won none!"
