Liam Kelly to Rangers transfer sparks Euro 2024 conspiracy theory as Scotland hero despairs at 'terrible shout'

Motherwell star Stephen O'Donnell has batted away suggestions that Liam Kelly has been kept in the Scotland squad because he is about to move join Rangers.

Record Sport understands that Craig Gordon is to miss out on Euro 2024 with boss Steve Clarke cutting the four keepers he named for the friendly in Gibraltar to three for the tournament - with Angus Gunn, Zander Clark and Kelly being named over Hearts veteran Gordon. Rangers defender John Souttar also looks set to miss out out on the tournament - but that hasn't stopped conspiracy theories ramping up.

Kelly is expected to becoming a Rangers player this summer having come to the end of his Motherwell contract the Scottish Premiership campaign. A Clyde 1 Superscoreboard caller floated that the deal would have something to do with Clarke giving the nod to Kelly over Gordon. He said: "I wonder if the Liam Kelly move to Rangers is a factor. I don't know if that is one of the reasons he goes to the Euros ahead of Craig Gordon."

But Kelly's former Fir Park teammate O'Donnell - who became a Tartan Army hero with his performances at Euro 2020 - wasn't having any of it. He said: "Why would that have anything to do with it?"

The baffled Steelman then sarcastically added: "Yeah cause he (Clarke) thinks he really wants to please all the Rangers fans and bring Liam Kelly. For all the things I think you could argue about that is a terrible shout."

The Fir Park No. 1 has decided to move on after a three-and-a-half year spell with the club. Rangers have reportedly offered Kelly a three-year deal to move to return to Ibrox.
