Liam Gordon: St Johnstone ready to "prove people wrong" and begin climb up standings

Liam Gordon insists this St Johnstone squad is determined to prove outside voices wrong and surge up the Premiership.

The Perth club sits bottom of the table after eight games of the league season and many are expecting their struggles to continue.

Saints, still searching for a first win of the season following back-to-back draws, welcome Motherwell - weather-permitting - to McDiarmid Park on Saturday afternoon.

“There are a lot of platforms to voice opinions,” said skipper Gordon.

“If there are opinions out there, so be it. We know what we need to go and do.

“We’ve got a tight-knit playing squad and we know what is at stake.

“Everyone else can say what they want. Every season we get written off.

“So we’re wanting to go out there and prove more people wrong.”

Gordon admits the start to the season has been far from ideal - and he feels the pain of defeat as much as anyone.

He said: “Of course it means a lot to me.

“I enjoy playing football and enjoy winning games. I’m still a fan.

“I have friends and family who are supporters and you don’t want to let anyone down.

“There are maybe times you get caught up in it too much, but you learn as you go on.

“I’m passionate about the club and I’ll always have that.

“The start of the season, there is no denying, was difficult.

“But that is behind us now and there are no excuses - we have a really good squad.”

Saints head into the test against the Steelmen after drawing 0-0 against Aberdeen before the international break.

“We got a point and kept a clean sheet up there - not many teams will do that this season with the squad they’ve got,” Gordon said.

“The momentum is building so the break probably came at a bad time because we wanted to keep on playing.
