Liam Finn set for head coaching berth with Championship strugglers

Liam Finn is set to land his first head coaching role after being offered the Dewsbury Rams job. Rugby League Live understands the former halfback, 38, will take up the role following the departure of Lee Greenwood earlier this month.

Finn is currently acting as an assistant coach at hometown club Halifax Panthers, a role he took up following his retirement at the end of last season. He ended his career at Dewsbury, spending two-and-a-half seasons at the Tetley's Stadium before hanging up the boots at the end of last year.

Capped 30 times by Ireland, Finn made almost 500 appearances during a career that saw him cement himself as one of the best players in the Championship this millennium. Starting his career in Super League with Fax, Finn first established himself with the Rams, making over 100 appearances between 2006 and 2009.

That earned him a move to Featherstone Rovers where he enjoyed success under Daryl Powell, who would eventually sign him again in 2014. Finn was given his first Super League opportunity in a decade at Castleford and would spend the next five years in the top flight with the Tigers and then Wakefield Trinity.

A short spell at Newcastle Thunder followed before returning to the Rams to end his career. Dewsbury fell into the Championship relegation zone on Sunday after falling to defeat at home to London Broncos, who leapfrogged them as a result.

Former coach Greenwood left the role following a 66-0 defeat, which was ironically against Finn's current employers Halifax.
